About
College of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (CBAE) can be traced back to Changchun Institute of Automobile Tractor, which was initially founded in 1955. Over the past 60 years, it evolved from the two majors of Changchun Institute of Automobile Tractor --- Tractors and Agricultural Mechanization to College of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The college started Master programs in 1960s, Ph.D. programs in 1981, and postdoctoral training program in Agricultural Engineering in1989. As for now, the college has conferred Bachelor Degree to more than 9,000 graduates, Master Degree to more than 900 graduates and Doctoral Degree to 300 graduates. Currently, there are 930 students enrolling in CBAE. Among them, 586 are undergraduate students, 212 are graduate students, 129 are doctoral students, and 3 are international students.
The First-Level discipline of CBAE is Agricultural Engineering with authorization to grant Doctoral Degree. And the discipline ranked the third overall in the Discipline Evaluation of Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2012. Now, five sub-disciplines are set up under the discipline of Agricultural Engineering, which are Agricultural Mechanization Engineering, Agro-biological Environment and Energy, Agricultural Electrification and Automation, Bionic Science and Engineering, and Agricultural and Forestry Economy Management respectively. Among them, Agricultural Mechanization Engineering is one of the national key disciplines since 1988. New fields of inter-disciplines and multi-discipline research are the characteristics of CBAE.
Leaded by Professor Luquan Ren,Academician of Chinese Academy of Science, the college establishes an experienced and innovative teaching and scientific team. At present, there are totally 131 faculty members at CBAE, including 35 full professors, 32 associate professors, and 22 Ph.D. supervisors. Among them, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two distinguished professors of Scholars Program, two members of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, one winner of National Science Found for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. More than 88% of the teachers hold Ph.D. degrees, and about 43% of the teachers having abroad experience.
CBAE has a high level of scientific research capability. Many key provincial and ministerial-level laboratories and research bases are instituted at CBAE, such as National and Local Joint Laboratory of Bionic Engineering, Key Laboratory of Bionic Engineering of Ministry of Education, Institute of Agricultural Mechanical Engineering, and Agriculture Products Processing and Storage Research Institute. Among them, the Key Lab of Bionic Engineering of Ministry of Education (MOE) is the only one key lab to engage in research on the bionic engineering and established by the Ministry of Education. The research of CBAE is divided into six main directions, including: Mechanical Bionics Theory and Technology; Agricultural Engineering Bionics and Terrain Mechanical System; Agricultural Mechanical Intelligence and Machine Tools Innovation; Agrobilogical Environment Control and Energy Saving Technology; Agricultural Products Transformation and Value-added and Agricultural Informatization Engineering; and Agricultural Engineering System Analysis and Management Engineering. Recent years, CBAE has carried out various researches, and have produced fruitful achievements, including the National Technological Invention Award for 2 times and the National Teaching Achievement Award for 2 times.
CBAE has established extensive international cooperation and exchange with more than 10 famous foreign universities and institutes, including University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, Kansas State University, Tsukuba University, etc. The international exchange activities are various from academic exchange and joint programs to international conferences. From 2011 to 2014, the college has sent 110 teachers, 160 postgraduates and 21 undergraduates to go abroad to study, communicate, visit and attend conferences. Furthermore, CBAE initiated and established the International Society of Bionic Engineering (ICBE) approved by State Council, whose secretariat is located at Jilin University; founded Journal of Bionic Engineering in 2004, which was granted by EI in 2007, and then SCI in 2008; organized a great number of international and domestic conferences, including Asia Pacific Conference on International Ground Vehicle Systems, International Agricultural Engineering and Bionics Engineering Symposium, and International Bionics Engineering Symposium, etc.
